Tourist Couple Face Jail Time for Stealing Sand From Italian Beach

A couple from France are facing the possibility of spending six years in prison after stealing a whopping 90 pounds of sand from a beach in Italy.
According to the BBC, the couple, who were vacationing on the Italian island of Sardinia, were caught with trying to board a ferry for France carrying 14 water bottles filled with sand.
The couple reportedly stole the sand from a beach in Chia, located in southern Sardinia.
Sardinia’s colorful sand is protected, with the BBC reporting a law banning tourists from pilfering it from the beach has been in effect since 2017.
The couple, who are now facing between one and six years in prison, claim they were unaware of the law.
