The US State Department recommends Americans reconsider traveling to China because of arbitrary law enforcement, exit bans, and the risk of wrongful detention.
According to the
Associated Press, the advisory comes after China sentenced a 78-year-old US citizen to life in prison on spying charges in May.
“The People’s Republic of China (PRC) government arbitrarily enforces local laws, including issuing exit bans on U.S. citizens and citizens of other countries, without fair and transparent process under the law,” the U.S. advisory warns. “U.S. citizens traveling or residing in the PRC may be detained without access to U.S. consular services or information about their alleged crime.”
The State Department also warned Americans to be on the lookout for so-called “exit bans,” which restricts travel away from China once inside its borders.
The advisory from the State Department also said Americans should exercise increased caution when traveling to Hong Kong and “reconsider” travel to Macau due to arbitrary enforcement of local laws there as well.
