More than 50 million Americans are gearing up to travel for the July 4th holiday weekend – and those numbers are about to set a new record.
According to a report by AAA, approximately 50.7 million Americans are anticipated to travel at least 50 miles during the holiday period from June 30th to July 4th. This number surpasses the previous record of 49 million travelers set in 2019 and is 2.1 million more than in 2022.
“We’ve never projected travel numbers this high for Independence Day weekend,” Paula Twidale, the senior vice president of AAA Travel, said in a statement. “What this tells us is that despite inventory being limited and some prices 50% higher, consumers are not cutting back on travel this summer. Many of them heeded our advice and booked early, another sign of strong travel demand.”
Many people will travel this year, with 43.2 million planning to drive to their destinations. However, a significant number of Americans are expected to fly, with AAA predicting 4.17 million air travelers. This is an 11.2 percent increase from last year and a 6.6 percent increase from the record set in 2019.
According to AAA, the busiest day on the road will be Friday, June 30 and the best days to travel will be Sunday, July 2, and Monday, July 3.
