The US Justice Department has sued to block JetBlue’s purchase of Spirit Airlines saying the $3.8 billion deal would reduce competition and increase airfares for customers.
Attorney General Merrick Garland held a press conference to detail the antitrust lawsuit, with the Associated Press reporting lawyers for the Justice Department saying Spirit’s demise would eliminate about half of all ultra-low-cost seats in the market.
“If allowed to proceed, this merger will limit choices and drive up ticket prices for passengers across the country,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said during the press release. “By acquiring Spirit, JetBlue will eliminate the largest ultra-low-cost carrier in the United States.”
