Plans are underway for a massive surf park in Orlando featuring waves big enough to train professional surfers!
According to FOX 35, Ocean Sports Development has submitted plans to build the Orlando Surf Park, just northwest of Disney in Winter Garden.
The park would contain a 15-acre pool surrounded by an artificial beach. The Orlando Sentinel reports the pool would hold 35 million gallons of water and be home to a wave machine capable of creating waves as big as 10 feet! Plans include a beach volleyball court, playground, a pavilion, a surf shop, and an academic center for educational programs.
“We are bringing surfing to the masses,” Anthony Brown, the company’s chairman, said in a statement reported by the Orlando Sentinel. “While this is something you can do for amusement, we are really focusing on the development of this sport for high schools and colleges. Surfing is not currently an NCAA sport. It is an intramural sport, not governed by the NCAA.”
“We are excited,” he said. “Orlando is the number one tourist market in the world, and that’s the reason we targeted this location for our first surf park.”
