As a pro surfer, Lucy Small is a seasoned traveler who scours the globe in search of the perfect wave, so when it comes to travel tips, she has a few she always follows.

In an interview with Escape, Small, who advocates for gender equality in sports, revealed she has four golden travel rules.
“Only bring clothes you always wear at home. Always keep $US50 tucked into your passport. Bring more than one bank card and keep one hidden away. Be prepared to be a little fearless,” Small told Escape.

Small told Escape that travel has taught her to be “self-sufficient,” revealing, “ When I’ve traveled alone I’ve had to solve all my problems on my own and navigate how to get to places and language barriers, and just figure it all out. I’ve really learnt to trust myself.”

The pro surfer, who took the World Surf League to task over unequal competition pay for female surfers, wants young travelers to know that it is important to say “yes” to all the opportunities that pop up during their travels.

“It’s one of the few times in life that you can just experience anything that comes your way, so best to be open to it,” the Aussie native shared with Escape.

And although she has traveled the globe from Algeria to Bangladesh, there is one particular country she would love to be in right now.
“I went to Mexico earlier this year and the street food there is my favourite,” Small said. “I pretty much ate tacos for every meal for two weeks. Please put me on a beach in Mexico under a palm tree with a perfect wave out front.”
