On a five mile sandy stretch of beach on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas sits a resort where even the curviest of vacationers can feel safe and confident donning a swimsuit.
Simply named ‘The Resort,’ the plus-size vacation paradise is the brainchild of James King who opened the resort two years ago after witnessing overweight people struggle to have a great time on vacation at other properties he worked at.
In an interview with People, King revealed he worked on the idea for a decade, narrowing down the ideal location, furniture design that would be comfortable for plus-size vacationers and his wish to create a sanctuary where guests could let loose without any fear of body-shaming.
“The response has been phenomenal,” King told People. “I’ve been booked all year and about 10% of that is repeat customers, which is amazing when you’ve only been open two years.”
King said while everyone arrives at The Resort as strangers, they leave as friends, telling People, “All of a sudden most of the stigmas are gone, because nobody’s staring at them. They just feel like they can identify.”
Currently, The Resort books only small groups of up to 24 people at a time, but King plans to build another property soon on nearby Cat Island in the future.
“The guests love it, because it really does feel like their own place,” he told People.
