The U.S. State Department is urging Americans overseas to exercise increased caution after issuing a worldwide travel advisory last week.
According to USA Today, the travel advisory cited “increased tensions in various locations around the world, the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests,” as tension in the Middle East continues to escalate.
“The U.S. Department of State has no higher priority than the safety and security of U.S. citizens overseas,” a State Department spokesperson told USA TODAY. “We take seriously our commitment to provide U.S. citizens with clear, timely, and reliable information about every country in the world so they can make informed travel decisions.”
The State Department urges U.S. citizens to stay vigilant in popular tourist locations and recommends they sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, which provides information and makes it easier to locate them during an emergency.
