Transatlantic travel could soon get a whole lot faster thanks to American Airlines’ future plans to add at least twenty supersonic jets to its lineup.

In a press release, the airline announced it has agreed to purchase at least twenty supersonic “Overture” jets from Boom Supersonic, with an option to acquire forty more.
The Overture jets are expected to carry 65 – 80 passengers at twice the speed of today’s commercial aircraft. Flying from Miami to London will take just five hours, and passengers flying from Los Angeles will land in Honolulu, Hawaii, in just three hours.

According to the press release from American, Overture is being designed to fly more than 600 routes around the world in as little as half the time.

“Looking to the future, supersonic travel will be an important part of our ability to deliver for our customers,” said Derek Kerr, American’s Chief Financial Officer. “We are excited about how Boom will shape the future of travel both for our company and our customers.”

The Overture is slated to roll out in 2025 and carry its first passengers by 2029.
