Published
4 years agoon
Everyone loves Halloween. Spooky season is one of the rare occasions people get to share their personalities and wittiness by dressing up as their favorite characters or reinterpreting classic costumes like ghosts, witches, and vampires.
But undeniably, the best costumes every year are those that took a clever mind and a lot of creativity. Not everyone thinks outside the box, but those who do steal the show, and sometimes even the costume contest prize money. Click Start SLideshow to see the most genius Halloween costume ideas of all time!
A Trophy Family
You’ve heard the term “trophy wife,” and this woman and her kids are simply the embodiment of that phrase! Mobility may be a little limited, but using only a few gallons of gold paint, this family was able to come up with something quite smart! Hopefully the dad realizes how fortunate he is.
Call Me in the Upside Down
This awesome Stranger Things cosplay incorporates Winona Ryder’s character as well as the wall where she creates a Christmas light alphabet in order to find her son. The guy’s shirt even reflects her wallpaper!
Solemnly Swear That (They) Are Up to No Good
You may not consider this to be particularly creative, but you cannot deny how ridiculously adorable it is! The Harry Potter costume has been done over and over again, but this dad found a great way to get all the munchkins and himself in on the fun and still look pretty cute and convincing.
Please Do Not Touch
The desert cactus was an Instagram hit this past year for some inexplicable reason, so this woman decided to keep the hashtag going. Rather than just make a cactus costume, however, she decided to insert a little humor and originality.
That’s a Pretty Hot-Looking Costume
Introducing: the perfect introvert costume. Get to the party, head straight for the fireplace, and just sit there the whole night. Don’t even talk when people walk over to you and make some quip like “Ooh, toasty warm!” Floorspace a little crowded? No problem for this guy.
A Blustery Day
This guy honestly looks like he’s outside! The newspaper on the knee is a nice touch, but the unfolded umbrella and the blown-back hair and coat really just complete it.
His Highness Prince George Has a Drinking Problem
Even though they’re British, pretty much every member of the royal family is a celebrity, not the least of which is Prince William’s son George. Using part of a baby doll and a print out of William’s head, this man was able to transform himself into the little prince. What just makes it all the better is that he’s chugging a beer.
Office Assistant
Microsoft Word users will fondly (or maybe not so fondly) remember Clippy, the darn-cutest paper clip ever created by mankind. If this woman is an actual office assistant, it only makes her clever costume all the more appropriate.
The Great Halloween War
Every kid played with these back in the day. You couldn’t exactly do much with them, but there were dozens of different kinds and you could buy them by the bucket and set up your own miniature army. Using only jumpsuits and various props spray painted green, these guys were able to live out their childhoods once again.
Half The Guy He Used To Be
This one is actually genius, and the best part is that it’s actually super simple. All you need are some clothes that you don’t mind ruining a little bit and a false upper and lower torso. We did a double-take on this one as well, but we’ll just say that you have to do a little bit of flexible bending to make this costume work.
French Kiss
Everyone’s heard of a French kiss, but not from guys like this! These guys came up with a pretty good real-life pun, and all you need are some striped shirts, berets, maybe a cigarette, and a glass of wine, oh, and someone who can do good KISS face painting.
They Want S’more Kids
A+ for creativity on this one! The greatest aspects of this family costume are that it’s a collaboration, it’s relatable, and it probably only cost them $30. The Hershey bar costume was the only store-bought one, and the rest is just paper mache and cardboard.
It’s….Universal Healthcare!
Cue the rimshot! You have to give this couple credit for thinking outside of the box on this one. It’s a super simple costume, but the best part is that it’s sure to truly scare about half the population!
Roll Out, Hannibal
Hannibal Lecter from Silence of the Lambs has been done a lot, but this guy figured out how to do something a little more unique. Using a pair of fake legs strapped to a hand cart, he was able to recreate the famous scene when Hannibal is wheeled out on a gurney. The great part is that mobility wasn’t an issue for him!
A Costume That’s 11/10
With Stranger Things being as popular as it is on Netflix, no doubt Halloweens have seen a large influx of related costumes. This guy is just proving that you don’t have to be female or young or even white to dress up as everyone’s favorite Eggo-eating telekinetic girl.
Barista Says “Death to the Unicorn Frap”
The week that Starbucks’ Unicorn Frappuccinos came out was probably the week that every barista wanted to quit. While the company’s profits saw a huge increase, they likely saw a decrease in new hires! This woman smartly decided to dress up as every barista who had to inhale buckets of pink powder.
Three Heads = A Good Boy x3
This Harry Potter ensemble is both cute and original! This kid decided to get the dog in on the fun by dressing him up as Fluffy the three-headed dog from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. We also had to do a double-take on this one, since this actually looks pretty convincing at first (and second) glance!
Jobs Back From the Dead
No doubt if you saw this guy walking around you’d think they found a way to revive Steve Jobs himself (using the iRevive, of course). This guy looks exactly like the late Apple CEO himself, and no doubt his costume had more than a few heads turning and staring for minutes on end.
Jon Snow White
As the most mainstream show in existence, Game of Thrones costumes have been done and redone countless times. This guy, however, decided to merge his Jon Snow costume with another character with the name Snow. The hilarious thing is that it’s a blend of a = R-rated show with a G-rated film.
Disney’s Frozen (No, Not the Movie)
According to urban legend, Walt Disney himself was frozen after his death and still rests somewhere deep underneath Disneyland just waiting to be revived. It’s totally false, but this guy still wanted to make fun of it. The icicles on the eyebrows and mustache are a nice touch!
A “Formal Apology”
That’s alright if you didn’t get it right away, neither did we. Once it sinks in, though, you have to admit that this is a pretty clever play on words. We accept his apology.
The Name’s Bacon….Kevin Bacon
Everyone loves a good pun, and what better way to do it than making fun of the Footloose star? It’s ridiculously easy, too! All you need to do is paint a piece of cardboard (or even just buy a cheap one) and put a name tag sticker on the front.
On An Explosive Note
This lady’s costume is a burn, both figuratively and literally. Despite being a major smartphone manufacturer, Samsung will never be able to get past the exploding Note 7 fiasco. This lady decided to add more fuel to the fire (no pun intended).
Don’t Angler Them
It takes some really good makeup skills (and some rather clever lighting) to make this look as authentic as it does! Hopefully these girls didn’t use their costumes to lure in some unsuspecting guys…
Peeling Back the Layers
This is some next level genius right here. Using a 3D printer, this guy was able to make a mask of his own face and then use some pretty convincing makeup to make it look like he peeled his own face off.
Red (Han) Solo Cup
The only kind of costume that’s been done more than Harry Potter is Star Wars. This lady found a clever way around it, though, when she dressed up as both everyone’s favorite scoundrel smuggler and every college student’s staple drinkware.
Holy Guacamole, It’s….Holy Guacamole!
Everyone’s used the phrase “holy guacamole” at some point, and this is yet another clever play on words. And you don’t have to be wealthy to be clever, either. This costume only required a green dress, some green and black felt, and the cheapest angel wings and halo out there.
Grumpy Cat, Human Version
No internet meme has reached such levels of popularity as the Grumpy Cat. It was an internet sensation like no other, but this lady totally nailed the look! It’s a look that’s sure to get a lot of attention (though just not, you know, guy attention).
Me and My Shadow
Everybody and their mother have dressed up in some kind of Disney garb for Halloween, but this (we’re guessing boy?) figured out something pretty clever — Peter Pan’s shadow! The hilarious part would be finding somebody dressed up as actual Peter Pan and then just “shadowing” them for the entire evening!
Watch Out For the Rat Patootie
Ratatouille is a cherished animated movie, and this guy wanted to honor the culinary rodent film by dressing up in his very own chef clothing, a glass of wine in hand. The best part is the shadow of the rat inside his toque! That’s either a plastic rat or some pretty clever lighting!
