The storm, expected to hit on Tuesday, caused American Airlines to cancel its entire Boston schedule for that day as meteorologists predict the storm to dump at least a foot of snow in the region.
According to CNBC airlines will often cancel flights ahead of time to avoid stranding passengers and crew, which can ultimately lead to further delays if crews are unable to be where they need to be when flights resume.

Several other airlines with flights out of Boston, including Delta and Jetblue are waiving ticket-change fees for travellers affected by the impending storm.
