Would you stay in a revamped former jail if you had the chance?
According to TripAdvisor, the best B&B in America and second best in the world is a former jail located in Galena, Illinois.
TripAdvisor reviewers have ranked the Jail Hill Inn so highly, it was awarded the Travelers’ Choice Award for 2019.
The 135-year-old building served as the county jail for nearly a hundred years, before undergoing a complete renovation in 2015 and getting a new lease on life as a five-star Bed & Breakfast.
According to Travel+Leisure, the Jail Hill Inn earns every one of its five star reviews thanks to the sumptuous decor, wonderful host and delicious food. Upon arrival guests are treated to champagne and chocolate. They also enjoy a three-course breakfast in the morning and a wine and cheese reception in the afternoon – a far cry from when criminals were housed in the property.
“It’s kind of a juxtaposition, going from being a place nobody wanted to be, to being a place everybody wants to be,” Travel+Leisure are reporting B&B owner Matthew Carroll as telling the Los Angeles Times.
