The Bonfires of St. John, a multiday midsummer festival, has fired up in Spain.
A video shared by Twitter user Antonio shows a masclet, a daytime fireworks spectacle designed for a loud, rhythmic sound, rather than a light show. The event took place at the Plaza de Los Luceros in Alicante, Spain.
Festivities begin with the setting up of street displays on June 19 and continue through the Feast of St. John on June 24. In addition to the daytime masclets, there are street parties at night. The culmination of the festival includes more fireworks, bonfires and the burning of effigies.
The festival is especially popular in Alicante, but its celebrated in towns all over Spain, as well as in Portugal and South America.
